This is the ideal time to plant shrubs and trees. Just make sure you do it when the temperature and ground are above freezing.

If you have not applied your overwintering lawn fertilizer, be sure to do it at the beginning of the month.

Most homeowners shut down work in their yard as the days get colder and rainier but there is much to do in your garden this month. You have to capitalize on the few dry short days.

Later in the month plant spring flowering bulbs but be sure to purchase them early for the best selection so they don’t sit in the warm store and start to sprout. Keep them in a cool, dry place until planting.

The days are getting noticeable shorter. We have lost about an hour of light in the morning and the evening. During September plants begin the slow process of hardening down for winter.

Kick back and relax a little and enjoy your garden. The most critical thing you can do in your garden this month is water and then water some more.

Make sure your lawns get approximately 1 inch of water a week, either by rain or by sprinkler. Also most of your shrubs need to be deep watered every couple of weeks.

In June, the warm weather is ideal for the planting your summer annuals if you haven’t planted them earlier.

Morning and evening light offers long days of gardening. After Mother’s Day, you are quite safe in planting your summer annuals.
